Two of my favorite memories (at least those I can reveal) of my time with Tony involve public open house events at the Colgate Foggy Bottom Observatory – observing the annular solar eclipse (May 10, 1994) and the Venus transit of the Sun (June 5, 2012).
"I found that Tony always had the time for me."
It has been a privilege to have had Tony as a colleague and mentor during my thirty-two years at Colgate. He has shown me how one can truly be a teacher-scholar, as well as a fine human being. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to sit in on his "Astronomy in Culture" course in the Ho Tung Visualization Laboratory. I witnessed how one could effectively utilize the VisLab as a teaching resource to motivate students. Lucky for me, he did not require me to take the exams!
The astronomy program and the observatory would not be what it is today without Tony's foresight fifty years ago, when the research-grade Ferson 16-inch telescope was installed under his direction.
