Professor Aveni's genuine love of life, passion for astronomy and energy for teaching was a true gift to everyone. From the moment he entered each classroom to the many ways he reached/connected with students, Aveni embodies what it means to have the "Colgate spirit." I feel very lucky to have had terrific courses with this fantastic professor!
As a student, I was an English major who was desperately afraid of taking courses involving mathematics and science. But Aveni changed all my misperceptions. Far beyond the calculations and physics, my eyes were opened to a much greater and better universe of knowledge. I will always remember Aveni using the analogy of figure skating (my previous sport) to explain the rotation of binary stars. That's what we all need as we learn and grow... to be introduced to new concepts in fascinating and creative ways. Today, in my role as an activist/writer & filmmaker, I explain concepts/strategies in ways that I hope will reach a wider audience. I have no doubt it was Tony Aveni that shaped my way of wondering, thinking and explaining various issues the world. I'm forever grateful for being a student of Professor Aveni.
Wishing you the very best in your next journey, and hoping you will come to Arizona again soon! Thank you for all you do, Tony!
