Our family spent 10 years at Colgate University. Our four children went there from 1981-1991. They were wonderful years for all of us.
Let me tell you how we met Tony Aveni.
When my second child was entering Colgate I received a newsletter from my alma mater, Boston University. The headline read "Anthony Aveni, professor at Colgate University, and a graduate of Boston University has just been nominated Teacher of the Year in the USA."
How exciting to see that my children would be able to touch elbows with such an amazing person.
When my Freshman called to tell me how she was enjoying her first two weeks, I told her about Professor Aveni. I told her that every January he takes students to Guatemala, the Yucatan etc . to study archaeoastronomy. Neither of us knew what his subject was about.
Anyway I told her to go to his office and see if she could partake in his January trip. She did go to his office and and asked if she could join him. He looked at her with wide eyes and explained that it was mostly for upper classman and very often students from other schools and it was filled up and had a waiting list.
She called me after that embarrassing moment and I told her that waiting lists usually mean you can go. I encouraged her to go back in four or five weeks. When that time neared I reminded her about it and off she went again to his office. Again he looked at her with wide eyes and said no one dropped out. He was very compassionate because he felt sorry saying no to this incoming freshman.
Again I told her to go in four weeks. When I checked to see if she was planning on going, she told me Christmas break was that weekend and January term started right away. I told her to go!! What can you lose!!
Well, she walked in the door and minutes before Professor Aveni received a call from one of the students that they couldn't go. He looked at her with a big smile, saying to himself why search for a new person when one just walked in.
He told her the good news with a big smile and asked her for a check. She told him she just had to call home. She had no money in her checking account. I told her to write him a check and the money would be there momentarily.
You know the end of the story. She had a marvelous time. Her two younger siblings followed the two older siblings and one of them also went on one of Professor Aveni's trip.
We had a wonderful friendship with Lorraine and Tony. We saw them at Parents' weekends and when they came to Connecticut we always reached out to one another. They were a family to us.
When Tony is speaking in Fairfield County, we always go to hear him.
Anthony Aveni made Colgate so special to the Sherman Family.
Our ten years were filled with big hugs and loads of love for the Avenis.
How lucky we are that Tony picked Colgate and all of the Sherman children did too.
Best wishes on your next journey. Hope you have many years filled with good health, happiness and loads of love. And thank you for the wonderful gift you gave the Sherman Family.
